Chyna Mays

Chyna is interested in engineering biology as a sustainable alternative to conventional industrial technologies. While receiving her Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering at Stanford University, she learned that medicine is not the sole way to improve human health. Safeguarding the environment is an additional method to advance people’s health and quality of life. Thus, under the advisement of Professor Angela Belcher, her research aims to utilize biology to create a sustainable platform for extracting technologically critical elements. Currently, Chyna is a PhD candidate in Biological Engineering at MIT, where she is also an Alfred P. Sloan Scholar. Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Outside of research, Chyna spends her time mentoring undergraduate students and brewing teas.
