Research Description: Nowadays, Peru is known for having a mining-based economy, but there was a time when this was not the case. It was decades of increasing mining production enabled by financial schemes what changed this. By following geologists, bankers, and bureaucrats, I reconstruct the process through which the extractive projects planned by these actors permanently modified the Peruvian environment. One of my goals is to call attention to how the need for natural resources impacts spaces and livelihoods of entire societies, encouraging a careful reflection around present day dilemmas related to the increased need for natural resources in the energy transition.
