Frank is a Ph.D. Candidate working with Prof. Krystyn Van Vliet in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Previously, he received a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Penn State and a B.A. in Mathematics/Engineering from Saint Vincent College.
With the support of the Martin Fellowship, Frank works toward understanding both the causes and effects of mechanical degradation in Li-ion batteries. He uses mechanical testing methods to help predict when tiny electrochemistry-induced fractures will occur in battery systems, and probes the short-term and long-term changes in battery performance that arise as a result of fracture. His research ultimately aims at the development of longer-lasting batteries that will enable the use of electric cars and renewable energy.
